Who needs an air conditioner in the Caribbean

by Jenny Munroe
(Saint Martin, Caribbean)

If you follow a few simple steps, you can stay cool indoors on hot days without an air conditioner, even in the Caribbean where we're lucky enough to live.

We live in a new house on Saint Martin, where most people run their air conditioners continuously. We decided we wanted to stop using it and enjoy the lovely sea air. So we put screens up on all the windows (lots of bugs in the evenings) and now leave the windows open, and the ceiling fans on when necessary to circulate the air. The wind cools our house to a lovely temperature ... gone with the air conditioner! All we needed was the screening and now our energy bills are so much lower!

Air conditioners are over rated
by: Bart Kelly

I spend a few weeks in Florida (Boca Raton) each winter and it always amazes me how dependent everyone is on air conditioners when the weather gets hot. Just open the windows and turn on a fan, and you save a ton of money. Get used to it because electricity isn't getting any cheaper!
