Transparent insulating blinds

by Judith Gautier

I would like to find a roll-up crystal clear insulating blind for the glass roof of my kitchen (slight slope) and them same for glass sliding doors 5 meters x 3 meters high. Although roof and windows are both double glazed, I'm losing a lot of heat. Many thanks.

Answer from Green Energy Efficient Homes

If you want to cut heat loss through your windows without shutting out the view, a transparent insulating blind is a good option. If you go for a roller blind, it's important for the sides of the blind to bind to the window frame (by running in a track or using Velcro) in order to effectively seal the space between the transparent insulating blind and the window.

Unfortunately such transparent roller blinds are hard to find, perhaps because it is difficult to manufacture a transparent blind that can be rolled up (as opposed to a rigid transparent window covering). I found only two websites that offer such a product, both based in the UK, and both apparently carrying the same, patented transparent insulating blind. These blinds provide performance similar to double glazing and can cut your heat loss by up to 80%. They are as transparent as glass, but provide ultraviolet filtering by cutting out up to 85% of the sun's damaging UV rays, which will protect your furniture, fabrics, and paintings / prints from fading. They use a crystal clear "Insu Flexible Glass" which, while incredibly thin, has the breaking strength of steel.

Solarize window insulators

This site was mentioned in TOH magazine, DEC 2010. Has anyone familiar with their product? It seems to fit many needs but do not see any R value to compare it to others.

Try Krumpers Solar Blinds, they have an R10 value for insulation purpose and are dual modular for summer / winter applications (sides). They work great.
