The Gas Furnace and the Elderly Landlord

by Joellen

I have a lovely little cottage that I rent from a nice elderly lady who is a friend of my Mothers. The rent is SO cheap ($350) that I overlook the elderly lady's moods and remarks so that I can stay there.
The problem is that the house is heated by a propane furnace. I am responsible for purchasing the fuel and the company won't even come out for less than 100 gallons (approx. $450). When I tried to suggest a less costly heating device, the lady goes ballistic and says the pipes will freeze, etc. I don't have an extra $450 to shell out and the company won't let me have a payment plan because I'm a renter. What to do?
