Well dressed corporate executive MINUS his expensive shoes and socks EQUALS energy savings!

Well dressed corporate executive MINUS his expensive shoes and socks EQUALS energy savings!

Bare feet let your body cool faster in warm weather - why not let the executives take off their formal footwear, and turn down the office air conditioning?

This is for the business office and can save a great deal of energy during the summer if it is implemented.

It is well known that allowing feet to breathe in warm weather cools the body and that cooling the soles can cool the entire body quickly.

Introducing a barefoot office would make excellent use of this basic fact. Although social and cultural traditions will make it difficult to introduce, it can be done gradually. And light bamboo sandals can be used.

Separating a powerful executive from his shoes will not be easy but the savings will make it all worthwhile.

How about doing away with suits too?
by: Robin from Green Energy Efficient Homes

I actually don't think this idea is that far fetched. In fact, in September of this year, Bangladesh announced that it is banning government employees from wearing suits, jackets and neck ties. Why? Because people who dress too formal for work get hot faster, therefore requiring more air conditioning. By banning formal attire at work (or perhaps by encouraging less formal attire) we can allow government and private offices to raise the temperature the air conditioning kicks in at, which of course will save energy.

I remember years ago when I switched from wearing a business suit to wearing 'golf casual' attire at work - same company, move to more enlightened dress code. Not only did I save a bundle on clothes and on dry cleaning, but I didn't overheat at work, or on the way to work (buses, streetcars and sidewalks not being particularly well air conditioned).
