Saving electricity in Italy

I really need to save electricity because electricity in Italy has always been amongst the most expensive in the world. Partly because Italy got rid of all nuclear power after Chernobyl by popular demand after a referendum was held on the issue. This means Italy now buys a lot of its electricity from France and other countries

Most homes are now built to try and save a lot with most of the heating and cooking being done with gas or in the case of heating pellet fire heaters which are becoming more and more common. Most water is heated too by gas which is the case in our home.

The biggest electricity cost in most homes is probably the washing machine, dishwashers and tumble dryers but unlike in many countries like the USA and others very few people seem to own a dish washer or tumble dryer and in fact we make do with only a washing machine.

We are thinking of changing all our lighting as an added cost saving measure. Most of our lights are down lighters and we plan to change them to LED lamps, we also try to use the washing machine only during off peak hours.

Focus on Efficiency

Maria,

If Italy is anything like the United States, electricity and gas rates are on the rise and there seems to be no end in sight. I'm not sure what the prices are like in Italy, but the costs for LED lighting is extremely high here in the U.S.; however as technology and production increases, the costs will inevitable come down. If your still using incandescent lighting in your home, I would suggest changing to compact fluorescents instead of LEDs (unless you can afford it); although not as efficient, CFLs will reduce your lighting costs by roughly 75% and that's money you can spend somewhere else.

Good Luck,
