My home energy audit

What did your auditor find, and what did you do to improve?

A home energy audit is one of the best ways to find major energy savings in your home. A trained, qualified auditor comes to your home and does a detailed assessment of your energy use, including air leaks that allow warm interior air to escape to the outdoors in winter, efficiency of appliances such as fridges, freezers, washers, dryers and the like, and the age and operating efficiency of your heating and cooling equipment.

The audit report includes a number of recommendations for improving the energy efficiency of your home, and you get a second audit once you're done implementing any recommendations you care to tackle. Often there are tax rebates or direct cash rebates from government or utility companies for the improvements you make.

In many cases, you'll get a rating or ranking for the efficiency of your home. For example, in Canada when I had my audit done a few years ago, I got an EnerGuide for Homes rating on my home - similar to the energy efficiency ratings one sees on new appliances. I then did a series of upgrades, and at the second audit got a new, higher rating. I also got a bunch of money back, which helped pay for some of the upgrades.

Here's your chance to brag about your before and after audits - or to tell us about your before audit and ask us what you think will give you the most bang for the buck. You can also read about other people's experience with home energy audits. Ask questions, answer questions, and help make this a community forum where we can all learn from one another.
